I have been dying to get started on some pretty coloured tropical fish – it was a lovely sunny morning this morning so after I had done my errands I locked myself away in my “studio” and began. I used Fabriano Artistico hot pressed 90lbs paper for the fish and a range of colours – Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Winsor Violet, Cadmiun Orange, New Gamboge, Pthalo Green, Alizarin Crimson, French Ultramarine and Cadmium Yellow. My brushes are all rounds and are 00,3 and 6. I also used a wound up tip of tissue paper to lift out paint from areas that I wanted to get back to whitish before the paint dried. Let’s go!
Here’s the outline |
Paint inside with dilute wash of Cerulean Blue and leave the odd white patch here and there for sparkle |
Now with that wound up tip of tissue paper lift out white areas before paint dries as these will be yellow/orange in a minute |
Immediately apply some Cadmium Orange/Cadmium Yellow mix where you want the yellow stripes to be – don’t have hear failure if things run – that’s the beautiful nature of watercolour. You can always dab any thing up if its really getting out of hand. Remember – you are not a camera – you are a painter!:) |
Here I am dabbing still damp paint away from areas where I don’t want it like around his eye and under his gills |
Now adding the dark thin lines either side of his orange stripes. Use a sensitive, hesitant hand and don’t be too perfect about it. I add spatter because I love to. Also paint in the smashing black spot and an outline around his eyes – again – leave some bits lost and others found. Let the viewers eye have something to imagine – this adds poetry to your work and a little piecec of you and how you see this beautiful creature. We all know it is a fish already.
