How to paint an Italian Greyhound

Niki Pledge is a lucky lady as she shares her life with 5 of THE most elegant and stunning-looking Italian Greyhounds I have ever clapped eyes on! Her Etsy shop ShadedMoon is dedicated to ravishing handmade high-collars for those dogs with elegant and long necks – Salukis, Greyhounds et al.

After fruitlessly searching various image sites on the internet for inspiring greyhounds images I remembered that I had seen a beautiful greyhound on an Etsy shop and then I found it again in my favourites. There they were – beautifully sophisticated with huge open brown eyes to melt your soul. I contacted Niki to ask if I may use her images in a collaborative project to help rescue dogs and so here we are – sketch number 1 of Cairo. A beautiful tan boy with a white blaze on his chest.

My plan is to paint several Italian Greyhounds in readiness for the Dogs Trust Summer Fair in Margham Park, South Wales on 3rd July. We are hoping to raise much needed funds via animal art print sales – last Christmas they went very well and so fingers crossed we will be successful again.

My friend Kate (who was indeed the person who promtped me to think about greyhounds as a subject!) and I are manning a stand selling my animal art original watercolours, archival prints, handmade cards and animal stickers! For more information on this event and if you live locally and can come here it is… Dogs Trust Fair

  1. OH I can't wait to see these develop – I have already had many favourites among your paintings so to have my dogs depicted will be wonderful and at the same time to help rescue dogs is just a perfect combination to me.

  3. Your work is so beautiful. There's something so sweet looking about the greyhound.
I have akitas that are great big mushy babies, nothing like their reputation. Our poodle bosses them around.
    Cairo is so handsome.
