I think whatever field you are in there are some pretty spot-on quotes that just manage to encapsulate what you feel about the process, the result and the feeling it is of whatever you are doing.
Some major arty ones that have stuck with me over the last 20 years since I began my journey into art are above and I hope they may inspire something in you.
Do you have some extra ones to add?
If so – feel free to do so and the one that best takes my fancy will win a dinky hand-stitched journal that I made with an animal on it:)

Ooh this has been hard ladies and thank you all for having a go! In the end I settled on rotkehlchen’s comment about her love for Degas’ quote – “Art is not about what you see but about what you make others see”. Thanks again – and congratulations to rotkehlchen
“Sometimes taking a line for a walk isn’t fast enough. I need to take it for a run”. Sorry, don’t remember who it is by but I totally get it.
Wicked! That’s a brilliant and unique one – thanks for your entry – getting good this – so many to choose from.
My fave is the James Dickie one…if only!
Here are a few of my favorite art quotes:
“How difficult it is to be simple.” – Vincent Van Gogh
“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” – Pablo Picasso
I try to remember Van Gogh’s quote every time I take a photograph, because a simpler subject in the frame is always better.
Hi Milka
Both of those are ones I saw yesterday and they too struck a chord with me! It was hard not to also include those.
Great that the one quote affects you as you photograph:) A
I particularly like Edgar Degas’s views on art… this is probably my favourite quote by him:
“L’art n’est pas ce que vous voyez, mais ce que vous faire voir.” – “Art is not what you see but what you make others see.” 🙂
Yes! I agree and saw that one yesterday when I was browsing…thanks for your entry – do you do any art at all?
Ocasionally, when I can find the time. I’m more the musical type of person but I really enjoy drawing. I usually manage to find some quiet once a month where I just sit in my room for hours. Very relaxing and from time to time I manage to produce something that actually looks nice 🙂
Congratulations rotkehlchen! It is your quote I picked – please email me your address at eastwitching@hotmail.com and I will send you one of my handmade notebooks:)
Oh, brilliant 🙂 Thank you so much, just sent you the address! So looking forward to the notebook x
Well done and it will be on its way today!
23. “I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.”
Author: Pablo Picasso
cool! That’s a good one Jacqueline – how are your artworks coming along?
There are quite a lot of art quotes that I like, but I’ll enter only one:
“You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star.”
― Friedrich Nietzsche
Wow! That is a totally new and brilliant one for me! Never come across it before – it’s great.
How is your creativity these days?
Glad you like it!
As for creativity… well, I wish I had more time for painting or maybe that my “chaos” wouldn’t be so chaotic, if you know what I mean – too much routine I guess… I definitely need to think about some changes.
It’s a fine line isn’t it between having some kind of order and routine out of which to bring your chaos in a productive way!
