Smalling

simple and small

Today it feels that everything is driven by wanting more, bigger, better.

I don’t know about you but I feel that way too much choice is actually making us miserable and very distracted. To coin a Joni Mitchell line I personally would like to live in a world where there is “None of the crazy you get from too much choice”.

I think things have gone way beyond the pale. For example – at my local Co-op there was a section of wall displaying over 7 brands of vodka and those were also offered in 3 different sizes. Even 30 years ago people would not have been visually exposed to that much alcohol and because it is so easily accessible and displayed everywhere I think people feel obliged to consume it. It’s all too much. When I was growing up in the 70’s you never saw a bottle of wine in your local grocers – you would have to go to the offie for it and even then the choice was very limited.

Personally I feel overwhelmed when confronted with so much merchandise and there have been times when I have just put down my shopping basket and left the shop as it is all too much.

It’s all about moderation and balance at the end of the day and my point is that I feel the amount of choice we have now is not only no longer adding to our quality of life – it is actually detracting from it.

Less choice leaves your decision-making process idle for longer periods – you aren’t constantly fraught with choices which kill creativity and make you very distracted and preoccupied.

  1. Couldn’t agree more Alison!! However, I can’t see things ever changing – especially in my lifetime. Everybody wants more and more and everything’s about money, money, money.
