Gracious Gouache

What a breeze it is painting with gouache!

gmonstCompared to the demanding nature of watercolour this is a piece of cake! You can take your time and not hurry - what a luxury. You can add light colours on top of dark and they show up - unlike with watercolour where you have to continually think ahead and preserve you white or pale areas and work fast.Gouache is so gracious - she lets you take your time - it is a revelation to me.I have always been drawn to opaque paints and love the chalky texture of it. I think I have many happy time ahead exploring this new medium!gpot

Nocturn continued

I’ve added some teazels in the night sky - love these wildflowers

Now I am at the stage where I am not sure whether to completely colour the foreground or leave it as it is so that it is a vignette.

Next I need to decide what colour the alliums should be. Do I introduce a purple colour at this stage and risk blowing the integrity of the image apart or use artistic license and keep them blue….

hare5

Finally got a chance today to sit down with my idea for painting a hare in amongst the grass - here is my earlier post about that if you want to see where I’m coming from:) https://eastwitching.com/2013/10/11/new-ideas-animals-in-the-landscape/

hare

I had done all my tasks and duties yesterday to clear a timespace to devote to this idea which will just not be still in my mind!

I can’t tell you how exciting it was for me to be able to get that moody, inky midnight sky going on top of the delicately masked out flowers that I had done earlier before taking the dog out.

They had dried completely by the time we got back in and I was off!

hare3I used Permanent Blue in spades mixed with Burnt Umber to get that very dark and magical blue down. While it was still damp I added Alizarin Crimson mixed with Winsor Green (yes - I know I hate it but it really comes into its own in mixing up a devilishly velvety DARK with AC !)

I bled the sky away to nothing as it progressed down the paper so as to create a soft edge.

Making a thick mix of Permanent Blue and Burnt Sienna I plopped in the distant hill and as the sky was damp it fuzzed beautifully.

Then using a pale wash of that mix I brought the near distant field into play and suggested some grass and undergrowth.

Now I Am onto the hare himself and painted him with clear water before adding Raw Umber all over him … more to come later but for now I am enjoying being under the moonlight of a British meadow and connecting with nature:)

New Kids on the Block - Custom animal birth announcement prints by Eastwitching

Very often I get asked to add special wording to my animal prints - especially for a new baby.

Elephant Baby FloraIf you know what the nursery theme will be - for example a woodland, safari or perhaps under the sea theme then a whimsical animal print to complement that would be a lovely gift choice.

An Oldie but a Goodie - watercolour poppy demo

I am doing a demo at a local art society on Tuesday and will be doing a poppy.

poppies for carolyn crop

So many people want to capture the breath-taking beauty of this flower that it is a popular subject and one I also love to paint.

Here is an old video (last year) of me painting a group of poppies in the breeze.

Underneath are some other poppies I have painted over the years…

New Ideas - Animals in the Landscape

I spent a very restless night last night.Up at 1am and still awake at 5am…with art on my mind.

Over the last few weeks I have been very unsettled and looking to create some art that is really rich and intertwined with the mysteries of nature.

A hare flying through wildflowers in the moonlight…a rough sketch I did today in pencil - 8×10 inches

I wanted a cozy and homely feel where nature rules (as she does despite our best efforts to impede her) and where humans and animals live in an idyllic harmony. I wanted hedgerows and animals and maybe the slightest suggestion of a human hand (eg a cottage roof or windmill - lighthouse etc) in there.

Well after much searching in my mind and pouring through my images and internet ones I feel I have something crystalising - I am so excited!!!

It will be me finding my self on paper. I am a real nester and value security of a home (don’t we all) and so I am looking forward to developing these…

My first one will feature a hare - alliums, undergrowth, fields and moonlit sky….

Alliums and other delicate purple and pink flowers will feature in my first painting

Do you enjoy natural motifs and if so can you tell me about them?

A Long Time Coming: New Rustic Watercolours

Finally!

After incubating in a half-finished state for about 2 months I completed a steer and a white chicken this morning!

Such a good feeling to complete them and tie up loose ends.

Original white chicken on 100% cotton rag - 8x10 inches. "Voracious Valerie"

Original white chicken on 100% cotton rag - 8×10 inches. “Voracious Valerie”

The chicken was particularly difficult for me as I am not very good at painting white animals onto white paper! I hope you feel she looks ok?

Also on the back-burner for about 3 months was this gracious old longhorn steer. Aren’t the horns mad?

"Mellow Maverick" - original watercolour - 8x10 inches

I enjoyed the warm colours of this steer and his wise look.

These are currently available to grace your rustic kitchen as prints too if you don’t want originals.
